How to prevent a fall from a ladder?
First, we analyzed the effects of ladder rung shape and different interface glove surfaces that are commonly used to identify optimum conditions to prevent falls.
We found that circular (vs. square) rung shape would be more efficient in preventing falls, as well as using a latex glove (vs. bare hand or polyester glove) had higher chances of preventing a fall. More details found here.
Second, we investigated upper limb muscle activation while holding onto an instrumented handle/ladder rung.
In the event of a perturbation (to simulate a fall), latissimus dorsi and forearm muscles worked to hold on to and stabilize the handle. The gloves did not affect muscle activation pattern. More details found here.
